My Personal Favourites

This is a collection of the pieces I love best (don’t tell the others).

Snowdrop Bloom

Acrylic and oil paints on canvas

This oil painting plays with size and perspective with the rabbit appearing underneath the snowdrops, giving the piece a fantasy-like feeling. This shows nature as both beautiful and majestic. This painting has more of a peaceful and calm atmosphere, creating a sense of stillness and tranquillity.

Swimming With Lilies

Acrylic paint and ink on canvas

This painting was an obvious favourite of mine. With Tigers being one of my favourite animals, and I love the blue and green colours that compliment the orange and cream of the tiger. I also like adding drips and abstract elements to my paintings, with the pearlescent ink working well with this painting. I wanted the tiger to be the focus of this piece so decided to paint the water in a more abstract style to contrast the realism of the tiger. I like how the wavy brushstrokes worked for this showing the reflection of colour and the motion of the water’s surface.

You Knit Me Together

Acrylic paint and gold pen on canvas

This piece is inspired by Psalm 139, with emphasis on verse 13: ‘You knit me together in my mothers womb’. It depicts God’s hands creating a strand of DNA. A reminder that we are ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ (verse 14) by Him.

Below (left) is the original image I saw and drew from, alongside the sketch I originally drew in my sketchbook (right), while listening to a sermon about this Bible passage. My Nan was sat by me when I drew this sketch and the drawing stood out to her, so I decided to paint it out for her as a Christmas gift. By doing this it allowed me to read though the whole Psalm and reflect on it again. The part that stood out to me was verse 8: ‘If I go up to the Heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there’. I want this painting to be a reminder of God’s unfailing love and light in whatever circumstances we find ourselves in. To represent this I added some gold lining to the DNA strand representing God being with us and in us.

Spring

Mixed media on canvas

This piece looks at exploring colour and pattern using the technique of gel printing, contrasted by the realistic form of a lamb, the painting shows the movement of the lamb appearing to be springing out from the prints reflecting new life and the feeling of freedom that nature creates.

I have chosen this painting as one of my favourites as I enjoyed the process of creating this piece. I got to experiment with the technique of creating prints using a gel plate. This has become one of my favourite printing techniques, as you can build up layers of colour and pattern. These colourful prints on tissue paper allowed me to create a bright background reflecting the colour spring brings.
